Amdahl Ditches Mainframes
(10/19/00, 8:57 p.m. ET) By Paul McDougall, InformationWeek

Amdahl Corp. is shutting down its mainframe operations.

The long-in-the-tooth but relatively obscure big-iron maker says it has cancelled plans for a 64-bit version of its IBM Corp. System 390 compatible mainframes.

The company, a unit of Fujitsu, will continue making 32-bit System 390-compatible mainframes until March 2002. And it will service and support them until 2007, Amdahl server-marketing vice president Carol Stone said.

But Amdahl will focus on Unix and Intel Corp.-based servers.

"These are systems that will satisfy 95 percent of users," Stone said.

The company already sells Intel-based systems and will reveal its first Unix servers in November, she said.

Stone said Amdahl holds about 10 percent of the worldwide mainframe market. Earlier this year, Hitachi Data Systems pulled out of the mainframe business, meaning that after 2002, IBM will be the only major player left in the market.
