Five Japanese IC Makers to Revise Interim Results Upward October 20, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Five major Japanese chip manufacturers have upwardly revised their settlements of accounts for the first half of fiscal 2000. The total consolidated sales for the microchip field of five makers -- Hitachi Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corp., NEC Corp., Fujitsu Ltd. and Toshiba Corp. -- are expected to rise about 21 percent as compared to the same period last year, to reach 2.1 trillion yen. (107.97 yen = US$1) This figure is an upward revision of about 200 billion yen above the initial estimate made at the time of the announcement for annual settlements of fiscal 1999. This will bring the operating profit to about 250 billion yen, as compared to an operating loss of about 70 billion yen for the first half of fiscal 2000. The five microchip makers are revising their settlements upward, except for Hitachi's total sales and Fujitsu's total sales and operating profit. Despite this favorable view for fiscal 2000, some of the makers are already foreseeing downward trends toward the latter half of the year. Indeed, some such signs are emerging. Intel Corp. announced a lower-than-expected account settlement for the third quarter, dragging down many microchip makers' stock prices starting from the United States in the so-called "Intel Shock." That shock gave indications to LSI makers that they must pay close attention to their business plans and investments.
