I'm not getting hoity-toity with you, simply asking for a little accuracy from an educated, intelligent adult. And I'm far too thick skinned to be insulted by something as trivial as your description of a language. So don't worry about that angle. Did you ever ask any of the Mexicans you grew up with to describe the language they spoke? Dollars to doughnuts that they'd respond "Spanish". If you were asked the same question, would you respond "I speak American"? Of course not, your language is English. There are of course multiple variations and slangs in either Spanish or English, but that does not detract from the fact that both languages are generically known as either English or Spanish regardless of where they are spoken.
