bob - the fundamental difference is that ORCL, AOL and SUNW are all driving to a centralized model, and MSFT is driving to a distributed model. This is a BIG difference and will shape the future of development on the net. What I have seen in the initiatives being pushed by SUNW and ORCL is that they are solving near-term problems in a way that works, but that long term those approaches have steep costs both in infrastructure and development which are unsupportable. As the size of deployments increases, those solutions grow exponentially in complexity. I think everyone knows that something new is needed. If MSFT can execute on the .NET vision they have a good shot at being that solution IMO.
