Ian,
I completely agree with you. No company is invincible. In a hightech race even a single misstep can almost kill a giant company. That is what happened to LU.
A few years back LU made a blunder in not pursuing 10G fiber optics and is paying a high price now. Whom should we blame?
Failure to execute and recover from mistake should be directed to da management. To top it off LU's M&A guys are as useless as the top management especially within the optical space.
There are a few shinning exceptions though (Ascend, Keanen for example).

Unlikely with their exceptional, alert, and agressive
management. They aren't going to become another Lucent.
