It just SEEMS like a first version release.

I once bought a piece of software to convert Mac files to PC (had some funky name like MacPC). It SAID it was drag and drop, but it wasn't really. Maybe they meant "Dragon Drop" (like total lizard dung.)

I feel that is where we are at in the software development cycle of the universe. The manuals shipped don't make sense, there's total a lack of one-on-one tech support, install disks are slip streamed versions so everybody has a different binary, the 800 line has been shut down and the only copies now are totally user supported and very buggy. All "fixes" and "patches" arrive by snail-mail from some third party I've never heard of and are really kludgy work-arounds done by people who have an obvious lack of understanding of the internals and three is no viable alternative that is compatible.

Now, Greg, doesn't that SOUND like Universe 1.0?
