No jealousy. He has a lovely education and had read almost everything written before 1900. He is extraordinarily intelligent. He has a conventional, right-wing, literary view of economics, good of its kind, but in my opinion, a useless kind. He has many tastes similar to my own, but a philosophical POV that is opposite to mine. I believe that words are just a convention or a game (Wittgenstein --Philosophical Studies). He believes that much ancient and medieval babbling has a core of truth. We can never agree on the value of literary and philosophical discourse. Naturally he thinks that I ignore the verities. I think he wastes his time. I think he ought to learn some modern science and mathematics, despite the difficulty and the fact that nothing can be proved beyond cavil. At the same time, he is IMO the only person on this thread who is always intelligent (though frequently wrong IMO), well-read, interested in precise use of language, and usually civil, i.e. exactly the kind of person whom I respect and like to tease.
