Stribe30 Re: <yet it would be heresy to suggest we liberalize that and allow it to be a free for all...>

Most crimes associated with drugs are committed because of the stigma of the drugs themselves & their cost.

My solution would be to have government run drug *FARMs*. Anyone allowed in. Once in, all drugs free -- in any quantity desired -- as well as room and board ;(. A month drug free to get back out.

No penalties for drug usage outside -- just have to pay for them.

No penalties for drug sales outside -- just 38% tax rate & let the tax laws take care of the problem.

Free market can be a great thing. Just trust people to make decisions based on their best interest.

OT twfowler...Personally.. I'd rather live in a society that attempts to control their proliferation.. rather then throw up their hands at the problem and let everyone own a gun.. should we get rid of drug laws as well?

I think we probably should. My opinion has changed over the years., I used to be a supporter of drug laws. I changed my mind for 3 reasons. First and most importantly I
support maximum freedom for individuals as long as what they are doing is not directly harming others. Secondly I think the drug wars have not really worked. Third I think the "war on drugs", has leads to abuses and to over federalizing law enforcement. Finally I think some of the violence associated with drugs would go away if drugs were legal.

And I can't completly ignore the constitutional right to have a gun. It does make for an important distinction between guns and drugs. If there was an amendment giving people the right to grow, smoke and sell marijuana, then even if I was not so libertarian and even if I thought prohibition would work, I would insist that no ban be put in place unless the amendment was repealed.

The war on drugs not working also points out how difficult it would be to enforce a ban on drugs (or for restrictions short of a ban to keep guns out of the hands of criminals). We spend billions every year to stop drugs but the supply never wavers. There are about as many guns as people in the US and guns are durable items. You don't have to keep making or importing more to guns available. I submit it would be even harder to enforce a gun ban then it is to enforce a drug ban.
