Simple economics is the answer.Sometimes unions are a necessary evil.My brother is a professor at OSU where no union is needed.Public schools are thought of as babysitters by many in the general public unfortunately.Just listen to them when there is a threat of a strike.This opinion of mine is gleaned from 11 relatives who teach or are principals FWIW.

Why aren't more young men going into teaching?

Cause when the young are in school, they have little respect for their teachers. So when/if they go onto further education, they tend to group into fields that have more respect: business, engineering, and medical
