Dual mode, and maybe some changes to the CDMA2000 infrastructure so it can talk to UMTS, is the "single world CDMA standard"
----------

Under IMT-2000 and the OHG Harmonization Proposal, applicable 3G flavors will be both ANSI-41 and GSM Map compliant. This is established. UMTS (Euro wCDMA) will conform to IMT-2000 specifications - as will CDMA2000.

Within 3GPP2, CDMA2000 1x EV-DV Standards specifications (now in progress) will be both ANSI-41 and GSM Map compliant. The specification will incorporate China (CWTS), Motorola and Lucent intellectual property with QCOM's foundation technologies.

Simply stated, being ANSI-41 and GSM Map compliant means that CDMA and GSM based systems will communicate without smart cards or dual mode chipsets.

This, however, is the future.
