Actually there are optical switches today but as you point out they are not capable of per packet switching. Still this wasn't the question. The question had to do more with the fabric claims for the AVICI product. Since you seem to know what you're talking about what are the limitations of electronics... how fast can an electrical fabric switch???

Yes, I'll come clean.. I do know the answers to these questions which is why I'm asking them... to make a point. AVICI's claims about a terrabit switch are all markettechture. The Avici switch may support terrabits of capacity on the I/O but the bus can not switch terrabit speeds - no electical switch has this ability.
