<<<Why aren't more young men going into teaching?>>

Most people who enter the teaching profession go into it for the wrong reasons: They are not primarily interested in the love of learning or making students learn; they are interested in the 16 weeks of vacation time and the job security that comes with the classification of "tenure". Moreover, most teachers do not identify with the world in which their students live. That is very important.

It is not primarily the money that prevents teachers from going into the profession. Most teachers get out by the early to mid afternoon and they can easily find another job to supplement there salary if they so desire. The question is one of respect and empowerment. Teachers are not given the power to discipline children when they misbehave or don't do their assignments. The kids run to the Assistant Principals and Principals here in NYC complaining that the teacher is to harsh when they get disciplined and guess who the A.P's and Principals defend? The students. So, many of the teachers take an attitude of "I don't give a hoot."

So, the lack of respect comes primarily from the system refusing to empower the teacher in the classroom. Most kids are going to horse around and try to get away with whatever they can unless the teacher is given the power to check and discipline the students.

The Teacher Unions are composed of Teachers who are sick and tired of putting up with the lack of support they received from Teaching. So, most Teachers will sell their soul to get out of the classroom and some of them become big representative bureaucrats of the Union, which accomplishes very little, with the exception of getting some teachers out of the classroom they despise so much.

Without respect and empowerment, why should a person look to become a teacher?
