besides, Rudedog. looking at it a different way, all those HP units will someday need to be replaced. HP units tend to breakdown more often than Dell's (return rates). So, those strong HP sales can represent an annuity for a stronger leader like Dell.

Darrell - I think you meant to say DELL remains #2 in unit shipments overall... aside from that I pretty much agree with your post. Unit growth was 22% last quarter, 21% is not a lot different. My point is that people should be focused on other issues, not unit growth. Sure a big drop would be a concern but a 1% shift is "more of the same".

Server units are not as important as server ASP, which we really don't know directly. If DELL is moving up the food chain they can show bigger revenue growth than the units would imply. CPQ grew its volume server revenue 42% last quarter and they sure did not grow units at that rate.

Darrell - it looks like the world wide number for DELL was 18% growth Y/Y, about the same as the industry. That's a 5% drop in W/W growth from last quarter. The 21% was US market growth and that's a generous round up from 20.2%. Here's the quote:

According to IDC, Dell led the U.S. PC market for the sixth quarter in a row with 20.2% market share. Dell was No. 2 worldwide with 11.5% market share and units up 17.9% Y/Y (and up 11.1% Q/Q) to 3.8 million. This is slightly higher than our estimate of 3.7 million for Dell's fiscal quarter ending in October. (Note that IDC's estimate is for the calendar quarter ended September.) It is important to note that Dell's FQ3 is back-end loaded) and that October shipments are not in these numbers.
