Grace, scanners got so cheap bvecause they were able to use defective chips from the camera people since all they needed was a band that was OK they got their scanner CCDs and CMOS parts cheap. Low end scanners use CMOS, lots of light there.
You can indeed integrate the camera control logic into the CMOS sensor and make a very low cost device. CMOS gets better. Some California Co has made a new one the encroaches on CCDs. use less current as well.
