I agree, I think of optical switching as good old circuit switching, which is why I don't believe optical switches will make Juniper-style packet-based routers obsolete, at least not for a few years.

Some recent articles suggested that people are thinking about optical packet switching. The problem seems to be there is no known way to buffer a photon in memory.
