Korea Electronics Show 2000 focuses on "Digital World"
Posted : 10 Oct 2000

The 31st Korea Electronics Show (KES) 2000 recently ended its five-day run at the Convention and Atlantic Hall in the Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX) from October 2 to 6, 2000 under the theme of "It's A Digital World."
According to the Electronic Industries Association of Korea (EIAK), organizer of the event, KES 2000 attracted more than 350 exhibitors from 11 countries, including South Korea, the United States and Japan, and generated $1.5 billion in export contract agreements and 170,000 visitors both local and foreign.

The Exhibition Hall, covering about 17,650 square meters, were divided into four pavilions, Multimedia, Info-Communications, Industrial Electronics and Electronic Components, displaying the latest global high-tech information, cutting-edge products and trend-setting products.

Some of the outstanding products displayed included:

Next-generation multimedia devices like futuristic digital TV, 60-inch PDP TV, DVD, and super-audio CDP.

Major information and telecommunications equipment such as IMT-2000 terminal, digital PC camera, ADSL embedded modem, and web boxes.

Cutting-edge products which are already dominating the global market including 288Mb Rambus DRAM, super-high resolution TFT-LCD, 65-inch super-large HD PDP, and 34-inch full flat CRT for digital TV.

Technology innovative products from venture companies included ultra-high-speed dome camera, external battery pack for notebook PCs, UPS switch, and digital voice recorder.

The world-leading high value-added electronics parts and components newly developed by domestic companies included 155/622Mbps optical transmission module, Tantal crystal electrolyte condenser, and super back-panel PCB. These components were awarded the Prime Minister's prize.
Even though KES 2000 provided the opportunity to view all of the latest high-tech information and technology products, compared with the Convention Hall which held the Multimedia show only, the Atlantic Hall accommodated Info-communications, Industrial electronics and Electronic components sectors all together—the latter show was somewhat weak and was not as crowded as the former. "The overall scale of the show and the spectator attendance have been reduced due to the upcoming ASEM, even though we've tried to arrange the schedule not to conflict with Asia's critical shows such as those of Japan [CEATEC Japan], Taiwan [Taitronics] and Hong Kong [HKEF]," said Choi Young-Hoon, director of EIAK.

Some of the exhibitors said IMT-2000-related exhibitions are rather insufficient and asked why Hyundai didn't exhibit in the show. "We recognize that the show needs to be more specialized and visitors need to be categorized," Choi added.

Meanwhile, according to the ministry, overseas shipments of electronic appliances made up 36.1 percent of total South Korean exports last year, marking the country as the sixth largest electronic goods manufacturer in the world.

V..interesting to note that as pervasive as Intel is, they are not invincible on law suits. In the mid 90's, Digital nailed them over patent infringement on Alpha chip technology. DEC at the time was hemorraging money and didn't appear to have market strength...but they beat'em.

I think it's critical that the market have a number of chip designers and foundry's that are strong...having one dominant player is dangerous. I don't think Intel sees it that way.

Tee time at 9:00...leaves are just over the peak..it's going to be 70 and clear blue skies...that's a bonus day in Boston at this time of year.
