I like it. But seriously, do you think the continuum of intelligence, distributed, or otherwise, extends up and down the evolutionary scale or is "clumped" up here with the vertebrates? We haven't talked about this for a while around here, and never in much depth! I agree with your steak-driver metaphor, BTW (if it was a mixed metaphor, good; if not, even better). Good imagery! I sure feel that way, but I don't know if it's an illusion, or the illusion of truth.
