I've got the suspicion, that if there is an advantage for communication and interconnection, that such a link would exist. If trees of one variety could communicate over time to other trees saying, "hey we're a little sparse over here", then maybe there could be a stimulating agent for growth or a tendency for seed to sprout there. Don't know how'd you'd even run such an experiment because it could take generations for the signal to be sent.

A couple of years ago they just discovered what may be the largest volume of biomass in the world, and it was right under our noses: a one celled organism of a kind we'd never found in sea water. Turns out that the stuff we were culturing the life forms on didn't grow this stuff - go figure. It was found with flourescent labelling of filtered samples.
