Please Tony just look at the statistics of yoy (year over year) growth of Sun. Also I think you are comparing enterprise level servers (which Intel is not a player) with low to mid-range servers.

sun.com

I believe Intel has a fantastic franchise and their stock is way undervalued especially after the good results they had as well as had by MSFT. The outlook is good for Intel and the stock should bounce back to the $60 to $70 range with an expected great 4th quarter due to X-Mas sales.

How does Intel usually do in the 4th Quarter? Do you have statistics?

If Intel gets into the superscaler chips that SUNW is in they will put up a challenge.

The one problem for INTEL in the high range is that presently they have no UNIX presence and Windows 2000 doesn't scale as well as UNIX. I believe the INTC is working on a chip that SUNW has ported Solaris (UNIX) OS to.

At that time they will be a player in the high end.

Don't count SUNW out just yet, they have a way of providing a software solution to go with, sometimes inferior clock speed chips, and thereby command high prices for their hardware.

Their margin shrinkage was cause by having to "ponie" up for expensive component parts of their servers to get the "backlog" of orders "out the door".

I own substantial shares of both SUNW and INTC and I am very encouraged by the latter despite Merrill Lynch's Joe Osha's downgrade (which will be proven wrong) IMHO.

Tony, <<<All the Sun myths are starting to vaporize. I can make a case just the opposite of yours, and it is that it could be Nova time for Sun.>>>

I hope you are wrong on this. If Sun sales decline, Scot NcNealy will be able to spin his way out of it and Sun stock will still go up.

But, I can see the headlines now - Server sales weak - Drew Peck downgrades Intel and Intel shares plunge.

Meanwhile, Intel spokesperson blames weak server sales in Serbia and maintains strong sales in Asia and North America and mumbles something about weak sales in less than 1% of the market doesn't really.......
