But most Ponzi schemes don't rachet up the 'contributions' as much as SS has. The tax and the ceiling on the wage base have gone up dramatically. The ceiling for wages subject to FICA is raised at a faster rate than the CPI since they use wage growth as do Federal wage scales. The CPI is just used to manipulate payouts. Before indexing the CPI, the benefits were bumped many times by as much as 50 percent and often 20 percent by both party-controlled congresses. You'd also have to add in the expansion of the SSDI as a result of the ADA bill in 1991.
