By substantially lowering the margin debt, the markets could experience a shakeout which noone wants to see...and in the long term companies need to replace the lost ressources by incurring additional debt, making them even more vulnerable.
Intervention is not a good thing, margin debit and short selling play important roles in the market.
Unfortunatly they can be misused or abused, generally by fool gamblers or novice investors.
This adds to the volatility increasing profitable opportunities for others with a better understanding on the technical behavior of the market.
Money goes from one pocket to another.
