I have no objection to Buddha and his crowd. He never pretended to be god or his messenger. He didn't threaten or kill. As far as I recall he didn't even shrivel up a fig tree.
His followers were quite reasonable, but, like Jesus, they ignored reality and tolerated evil.
The pacifism that is taught in Buddha's name is mere surrender, not the active satyagraha that at it most powerful freed India (for a moment) from oppression.
Nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing to lie about. If Buddhists have started wars and committed horrors don't deny it. Try to understand how people like Mao Zedong, Ho Chi Minh, Pol Pot and Tojo can grow up in Buddhist societies and become monsters. We know that Hitler was Catholic and Stalin was Russian Orthodox (even a seminarian). No religion is responsible for the horrors its members (or ex) believers do. An idea is not responsible for the people who hold it. But to ignore history, to cover up the wrongs, and to lie is pitiful.

Here's a little history of Tibet. See if you can find your 1000 years of peace.
