On that subject, I just noticed this odd blurb at ocworkbench.com via Anand...

Intel shifting focus : New Slot 1 P3-600 to fight against AMD Durons / Overclocker 10:00am GMT

Just in time when AMD announced it's delay shipment of K6-2, Intel decides to produce 500 thousand Slot 1 processors.

As for AMD, the delay phase out of K6-2 can pair up with Duron to "sandwich" Intel Celerons market. This is becasue K6-2's mainboard is cheap but Duron mainboard are expensive. The delay of the phase out date of K6-2 results Duron+mainboard combination higher than Intel Celeron+Mainboard.

As for Intel, Celeron is no longer a competitor to Duron. Intel is trying to deter the AMD camp by using lower end Pentium III Slot 1 proecssors. This is exactly the same when AMD first announces Duron, it still manufactures the K7-550 to attack Celeron 566. When the Slot 1 P3s are out, Celeron's mission is to target K6-2, while the target of AMD Duron will be the new Pentium III.

So watch out for the low priced Pentium III Slot 1. It should be very attractive.. perhaps as overclockable as the Celerons to 1Ghz?? ;)

Well, right. With Intel's overwhelming production of gigamines, I'm sure they'll be letting a really voluminous quantity of ghz chips chip as 600mhz slot processors. Right now, pricewatch is showing 600 mhz cumines in slot1 and fcpga at $140, which is about what a Duron 600 + mobo costs.

Cheers, Dan.

crazyoldman:

"What on Earth would make an OEM choose a Celeron over a Duron right now?"

Comment: Beats me...AMD just keeps doing while INTC just keeps hoping to do!!!
