I believe GLWs point about the development and integration
of technologies to be a valid one. In the evolution of DWDM, as an example, the efficiencies come in the control
of the many source of dispersion, which ultimately limit
bandwidth and distance. In GLWs development of their
Metro-Core fiber, a fiber offering for metro networks with
DWDM, the control of the many deleterious factors associated
with dispersion comes from the characteristics of the fiber
matched with the active components which drive it. By matching them, in their development process, they tailor the characterics of both to achieve the gain in their entire product offering.

I think this is what Ackerman meant-- However, I don't think this necessarily implies that JDSU+SDLI have to get into the optical fiber business. There is a synergy but after all, that is what nimble active/passive components
companies and nimble optical fiber companies are all about.
