Like I say, SUNW has been working hard to improve their image, and they have done a lot this year to make that happen. SUNW management devoted a lot of comment to that topic in the spring earnings CC and again this summer, pointing out that one of the barriers to getting more business in dot-coms was that those outfits did not have a strong enough IT team to install and manage the big systems according to best practices, which was causing the customer base a lot of headaches.

But numbers don't lie. CPQ has more than 20 services people for every 1 that SUNW has, and that does not count the "break-fix" people who support PCs - those are people who support enterprise installations. If there is an advantage to the service play, it should be obvious that CPQ's support of Intel based machines is ahead of SUNW in every area. Take a look at www5.compaq.com to get a feel for the range of offerings.

On a per-server basis, CPQ has 4 times as many service people available as SUNW even though they sell 5 times as many servers. CPQ offers comprehensive services all the way from architecture and design through installation and maintenance.
