Mark, excellent points. Stated yet another way, someone might make either a "stupid" or a "correct" decision to adopt a particular set of core beliefs, but that decision in and of itself does not rule out the possibility that the person is highly intelligent and generally not at all stupid.

Just because you (obviously) don't believe in their views, that does not make them stupid. Rush, is extremely intelligent.

As an example of not letting ideology decide who is smart and who is not, I am a conservative, and I think Clinton (Bill, NOT Hillary) is very, very bright. Can't stand him, but I would never call him stupid.


In the previous case, I used stupid as in crass and foolish, not as in unintelligent. Strictly speaking, Rush and Dr. Laura are not unintelligent. Strictly speaking, neither is Charles Manson (he's psychotic).
