Electoral College Results

Since the Presidential Debates began, the Electoral College has taken a definite turn in the Republican direction.

Following the first debate, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Missouri all swung towards Bush. Missouri is now leaning to Bush, Pennsylvania is a toss-up with Bush leading by 1 and Michigan is now tied.

Following the second debate, Wisconsin and Iowa followed suit. Both were toss-ups and have moved narrowly into the leaning Bush category. A further sign of trouble for Vice President Al Gore is that several states he had counted on are firmly in the toss-up category. These include: Tennessee, West Virginia and Minnesota.

This movement in the states follows the gains Bush has made in the popular vote. While it is theoretically possible for a candidate to win the popular vote for President but lose in the Electoral College, such an outcome is extremely unlikely.

If either candidate wins the popular vote by more than a couple of percentage points, there is no doubt that he will win a solid majority of the Electoral College....
