Re: "More seriously, how long after 1st Silicon would you expect Sludgepumper to launch?"

That depends - you need chip sets, motherboards and useful operating systems and applications.

AMD can launch it one day after first silicon - a lot of good that will do.

Intel has run into difficulties with faster Xeons - they can introduce these at a much faster rate than their customer base can absorb them.

The system level verification of these new products can run from several months to nearly a year when radical changes are made.

The SludgePumper is a radical change - if used for servers. Not only will it require lengthy, exhaustive system level testing, verification and optimization, it will at first require COMMITMENT from a recognized OEM.

I'm sure Xi Computers, LeapFrog LanSpecialties and CyberSmash Servers will be more accommodating to AMD.

Don't forget - when SludgeHumpy is first introduced, Intel will be introducing their second generation 64 bit CPUs and their 4'th generation 32 bit Xeons.

Then ask yourself - how many resources do the server engineering teams of Compaq, Dell, IBM, and HP and Gateway have for server applications?
