RE:"Jim, Hope you are right. At that price point, AMD would do just fine IMO"

For the first 6 months or so the P4 systems will be a novelty. High price, Dell and Intel will brag up the performance, yada yada yada...just like the i820 and i840 Rambus/P3 systems they attempted to sell...
This time it will be different though. Intel started earlier working 24/7 on getting to chipset alternatives for P4. They don't want another fiasco. OTOH, at least there was an alternative SDRAM chipset (4X AGP,VIA) (i810 and BX) for P3. P4 only has DUAL CHANNEL Rambus...hence the $70 bill with each chip...which is even a worse all around solution than P3 had.

I don't know how anyone can expect Dell etc. to sell anymore i850 systems than they did i820/Rambus systems. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe someone will correct me.

Intel says they will ramp P4, more like P2 than P3. To tell you the truth, Intel is pretty much swimming in the dark on the P4 launch. They don't really know how it will go.
