IS-96,97,98 refer to the subparts of IS-95. IS-96 is the basestation RF specs, IS-98 is the handset RF specs. Can't remember what is-97 is but I think it was the call protocol for handsets. One of them is also vocoder specs. May be wrong. IS-99 is circuit switched data. These are probably updates for 1x and hdr specs (which is not alot of changes actually).
