And I've missed you, and i scanned the last thirty or forty posts and am reminded why i enjoy your writing so much. I read this post of yours Message 14636988 in which you say We cannot "know", in any absolute sense, whether killing people is "right" or "wrong". We can know that a society in which people freely kill each other would be very unpleasant to live in. That is why we proscribe killing... and was reminded of another conversation we participated in a couple of years ago in which I said almost the same thing. I was asked about what an atheist's "code for living" might be: Here is, therefore, in its simplest form, this particular atheist's secular Code For Living, just made up this minute: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If you can't always do it, do your best. There's no one here to tell us what to do, so it's important we figure out the best idea that resides in us, and live by it. And the best idea so far is probably Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. As a community, judge and attempt to edify or protect yourself against those who fail to live in this way. I would enjoy arguing with both you and X, but there is that little problem of figuring out something to argue about.
