U.S.-based Extreme Networks establishes training, technical center in China

(19 October 2000) The U.S.-based Extreme Networks and the Beijing University of Aviation and Aerospace (BUAA) announced the establishment of Extreme Networks' first training and technical center in China on Sept. 22.

The computer center will be connected to the Internet, China Education and Research Network (CERNET) and BUAA's campus network, using network products donated by Extreme Networks. The network training courses will be synchronized with Extreme Networks' training center, according to the Oct. 13 Jisuanji Shijie Ribao (China Computer World).

The center will provide professional training on computer network technologies and Extreme Networks' network equipment to the American company’s users, distributors and employees, as well as BUAA's instructors and students, and the public. It will use the original teaching materials and test criteria stipulated by Extreme Networks, and will also issue certificates.

Extreme Networks established three offices in China last month, located in Beijing, Chengdu and Wuhan, and plans to set up an office in Shanghai soon, the story said.

London's Linx Expands With Extreme Networks BlackDiamond(R) inferno Series Modules

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 31 /CNW/ -- The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has upgraded its existing core backbone network by adding Extreme Networks, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: EXTR - news) next generation BlackDiamond® inferno series modules. Connecting more than 100 Internet Service Provider (ISPs) members across 6 exchange points in London, LINX is now switching more than 120 times its original traffic capacity.
Building on the existing BlackDiamond switches installed in LINX's Metro network, the new modules are based on Extreme Networks' inferno chipset silicon and allow for routing of IP traffic at wire-speed on all switch ports. BlackDiamond's superior modularity and passive backplane design enabled LINX to dramatically increase bandwidth without having to remove the chassis. All the existing modules were compatible with the new switching fabric, allowing for a seamless upgrade.

The BlackDiamond scalable switching system ensures guaranteed multi-gigabit performance on the switch regardless of network speed without congestion or packet loss. In addition to increasing the speed of routing, the upgrade has ensured that LINX is now able to sustain twice the level of network activity, having doubled the port density of each BlackDiamond chassis.

The simplicity and scalability of the network design paired with the fact that Extreme Networks' products share a common architecture ensured an efficient and rapid upgrade with minimal downtime.

"As the largest Internet Exchange point in Europe, enabling service providers to guarantee their customers the highest levels of performance is a core part of our business," said Mike Hughes, Product Manager at LINX. "Extreme Networks scalable switches offer Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and non-blocking features that have been proven to meet our needs as the volume of traffic has increased. It is vital that we maintain the quality of service our members have enjoyed while expanding the network capacity to accommodate future growth. Extreme Networks' latest implementation has demonstrated that it has the technology to both assist LINX's expansion and support its high-profile network."

"This is an exciting time for the service provider market as it experiences tremendous growth," said George Prodan, vice president of worldwide marketing for Extreme Networks. "We are pleased that we've been working closely with LINX and can assist them in managing their growth and the more than 50 percent of all UK Internet traffic that currently runs through our switching systems."

The BlackDiamond is an ideal platform for ISPs who are building scalable IP networks, as it enables them to leverage Extreme Networks' full suite of IP protocols, including the border gateway protocol BGP-4, OSPF, and IP multicast sparse and dense mode. In addition, Extreme Networks' hardware-based Quality of Service offering allows for per-port traffic shaping at the application level.

Established in 1994, LINX has two main functions: to provide a physical interconnection for Service Providers to exchange Internet traffic through co-operative peering agreements and secondly to further the interests of its members.
