As a geologist (by training, if only briefly professionally), I'd be curious if you could hit the high points of what is wrong with Punctuated Actualism (as most "adherents" view it).

There are holes, but not gaping ones, IMO. I've talked with people about this and I argue that Evolution itself is undergoing evolution. There may be a missing "force" or tendency for self-organization that, as yet, has not been accurately described.

This is more of a convenience to me to explain some anomalous periods because I've done field work, and the old Earth, gradual change model is pretty good most of the time. I did studies of Ordovician Trilobite assemblages as one of my first computer science gigs (for a guy finishing his Doctorate at UCI). These assemblages had something like 17 sub-species of T. dunderbergia and about 5 other species which showed "evolution".
