Eric- On this issue Gilder's point was purely technological. He simply does not believe the engineers will be able to make it work. Therefore, Gilder's less than prescient abilities on "business developments" is not an issue. His point is not that the GSM carriers will eschew WCDMA for CDMA 2000, but that the GSM carriers will not have a WCDMA choice because it never makes it out of the lab.

Eric- Seybold's reasoning as to DT's abandonment of Voicestream is that Voicestream's value to DT was that it was the only GSM network in North America, which DT could then buildout to a national footprint and upgrade with GPRS to 2.5 G capabilities. Since AWE already has the national footprint, if they convert to GSM Voicestream loses much of its appeal to DT.
