"The more stock [Nortel and Lucent] bring into this game, the more they will beat JDS in acquisitions," says RHK's Jay Liebowitz, senior analyst for optical components. "And these bidding wars will get expensive."

After listening to GLW's conference call, I think it's safe to say LU's out of the game for awhile. Pretty grim on that score.

As for consolidation, Moritz is not really breaking new ground in his thesis. This has been going on for some time and JDSU and SDL each mopped up the best in the industry before announcing their own merger. They knew exactly what they needed --- one advantage of being insiders in the world of photonics from the beginning. I picture the early days --- say, 2 to 2 1/2 years ago --- as being akin to planning the Allied Invasion of Normandy: maps laid out, strategies discussed, targets pin-pointed. When you've attended industry conferences and chaired industry committees for several decades, you tend to know who has what and you start picking them off.
