Network Appliance Establishes Subsidiary to Target Large-scale Storage
Requirements of Government and Federal MarketsInternational Organization Will
Offer NetApp(R) Network Attached Storage (NAS) Solutions and Professional
Services

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct 23, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Network Appliance, Inc.
(NASDAQ:NTAP), the leading provider of network-attached data access and content
delivery solutions, today announced the formation of the Network Appliance
Federal Systems, Inc. subsidiary, to develop and expand the company's focus on
federal and government customers.

The company also named Jay Chabrow, to the newly created position of general
manager, Network Appliance Federal Systems, Inc. Chabrow has over 30 years of
management and procurement experience in the federal community, focused
primarily on serving the Department of Defense, NASA and the intelligence
community. In June 2000, Chabrow was awarded NASA's Public Service Medal.

Network Appliance's new organization will act as a wholly owned subsidiary and
establish U.S. operations in three locations: Washington D.C., Denver and San
Jose, California.

The group will also establish a globally focused service and support capability,
working with customers to deploy enterprise-class network storage operations and
systems for Network Appliance's worldwide government customer base. The company
plans to expand internationally in Europe and the Pacific Rim in 2001.

According to Gartner Group, federal, state and local governments will spend
approximately $1.4 billion on e-government solutions, including specified
projects of hardware and software systems and services in 2000, and projected
expenditures are predicted to reach $6.5 billion in 2005.

"Network Appliance's tremendous success and accelerating growth in the network
storage market has dictated that we expand our efforts in the government sector
with a specific organization that can address the unique requirements for
technology, professional services and support of the government sector," said
Tom Mendoza, president of Network Appliance. "Today's announcement means that
NetApp customers and our partners in the federal market now have a better way to
expand and upgrade their existing IT information infrastructures. NetApp will
help federal institutions build e-business models that will streamline
information management operations and reduce overall IT costs using NetApp's
market-proven storage networking systems."

Today, current Network Appliance customers and integrator partners include CSC,
U.S. Department of Defense, Department of Justice, Internal Revenue Service,
Lockheed Martin, NASA, TRW and Raytheon. The company also plans to develop and
expand partnerships with specialized and established government integrators to
embrace the use of network storage technology by government and federal
organizations.

Federal Market Trends

Government specific market factors like the need to share terabytes of stored
data and information among government and federal agencies across the globe, as
well as with businesses and state and local governments, will boost the adoption
and deployment rate of Network Appliance(tm) storage networking solutions in the
federal government.

"Network Appliance brings tremendous technology strengths to the federal market,
and our success in pioneering the network attached storage market and becoming
the NAS market share leader will help NetApp's Federal Systems subsidiary to
establish a strong foothold," said Jay Chabrow, general manager of Network
Appliance Federal Systems. "Data storage growth in this sector is exploding and
our strategy is to build a significant revenue base from our operations and
deliver the highest possible level of service and support from a team of
individuals dedicated to success."

Network Appliance, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTAP) ($148.63)

Dane Lewis, Network Storage Systems and Software
"We are downgrading NTAP to a Buy from a Strong Buy for the following
reasons: NTAP's rich valuation limits upside, competition is heating up in the
NAS market, and NTAP's caching business remains unproven," said Lewis. "We
note this downgrade is not due to any weakness in the current quarter or any
slowing in the growth of the NAS market. We continue to believe NTAP is a
leader in the NAS and Storage Systems market and will continue to take share
from the general purpose server vendors. We also remain confident that NTAP
will continue to exceed our forward estimates."

>What lagging cache business?

dunno how long you've owned the stock, jack, but 1Q results reported in mid-august specifically cited a sequential decline in NetCache business from 8% to 4% of total revs. i believe the word DW used in regard to caching business was "unpredictable."

for the record, DW also stated on the CC that in caching, "we have almost as much booked this quarter [2Q] in two weeks as we reported for revenue last quarter."

CacheFlow, often named in the same breath, reported 75% sequential revenue growth. believe they even pumped up the volume that day:
