Chickens and eggs come to mind, of course.

Ah, but many things can LAY eggs, but a chicken only comes from an egg. Therefore, the egg came first.

But seriously, what about those of us who look at morality as a cost-benefit operation? There is a calculus that involves asking "if I contribute to entropy, I increase the likelihood others will follow." At least for me, I don't break a lot of laws because of the inconvenience of breaking laws and getting caught AND the inconvenience of setting a bad example for others to do the same. Many things are illegal that aren't immoral and many things are immoral (IMO) that aren't illegal. Yet, I'm disinclined to FORCE my moral evaluations on everyone else.

I tend to agree with X that this moral code is really just a living contract between people that is sometimes formally negotiated and sometimes pragmatically enforced. I've been let off for things that would have been life-destroying if I'd been prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. This was a gift and I changed as a result of this. How do we factor this in? That was a very good decision IMO.
