Depends what you mean. I find Carlos a little more entertaining. Carlos and Ayn appeal more to acolytes than to people looking for good literature.

Actually, I read an article in Psychology Today in 1979 that was citing a book - that article seemed to be supporting the thesis of the authors. I'd been running around thinking that Carlos Castenada had recanted until about a year ago when I did a web search. I can't find that he ever did. The "hoax" claim was by two other people who wrote a book, I don't know if they had a lot of evidence because I didn't read it.

I really don't know if Don Juan was an amalgam of various beliefs or people, a single person, or total fiction. Carlos Castenada, as far as I could find, hadn't ever said he made it up. And other than this debunking book, I can't find anyone who apparently cared enough to make the same claim as the two authors had. It probably ended Castenada's career whether the claims were true or not.

I just don't know what the truth is. But in terms of viewing the world, it is a powerful tool. Even if only metaphoric.
