Zactly..... Clearly the shares are coming from somewhere else which is where I was trying to drive this discussion.

Bottom line you can't have it both ways. There may be an opportunity cost issue here... or a dilutive issue... if you want to take the perspective of the options being unaccounted for in the outstanding shares - as Parrish does. Of course there is the tax gain on the exercise as well which has been ignored.

Alternatively one could take the view that CSCO has to purcahse shares on the open market to fulfill option exercises in which case the total number of shares is shown on the "shares outstanding" in the 10Q... in which case Parrish would be wrong with his 8.5B share estimate.
