Analysts believe AMD should be able to sell additional Athlons into PCs that fit in price bands between 1GHz-plus P3 & P4

"AMD reacting to PIV" is not my perspective at all. My take of the situation is that PIV is reacting to Athlon. Athlon is and has been taking market share from the PIII. So the questions need to be turned around for Intel to address.

The real question to be answered is, when will analysts wake up to "what's really going on" as opposed to "what Intel's spin is" on everything.

The P4 "beating out" Mustang is not a given in my mind either. Again, from an Intel catch-up perspective, my take is that Intel pretty much has their hands tied for the next three quarters.

Doug - RE: "It's hard to go out and compare processors that aren't available, if the latest news from JC proves out (that the spec scores showing a p4 at 1.4ghz 8% faster then a p3 1ghz in specfp2000 were legit and won't change for production version) then the p4 is a performance dog, and mustang will likely be a stronger perform at time of release."

The 8% number is from one of the normalized benchmarks, not the SPEC ones. The rumored spec numbers are 13.5% and 56% faster than 1GHz PIII in int and fp.
