EMI Records has chosen to use Microsoft Windows Media format for downloads of its music! Good golly, that's really great, at last somebody has decided to use that format. Not the SMPTE committee, which has chosen the QuickTime movie format for the standard MPEG 3 file format, but at least SOMEBODY is using it. Now of course, Microsoft doesn't actually make a penny for each download. How could they? It's a file format, not a licensible technology. But still, that's just swell. Thanks for posting that fascinating information. I think that, like Microsoft, Apple should send out a press release every time somebody chooses to use their file formats. We would get to read exciting news headlines like "Joe Blow Film Corp posts its film trailers in QuickTime format." That would be keen. Maybe Unisys could tell us all whenever somebody slaps a GIF file on their web site too. Did anybody else read the big press release from Redmond a few months back that proudly announced that Aetna was going to use Win NT for its intranet? Did anybody else notice that the press release failed to mention that Microsoft uses Aetna for its employee medical benefits? It is an extremely generous plan, with $0 co-pay. And what did Aetna have to do in return? Just use NT, and allow MSFT to make a big fuss about it. When you have good products, you don't need to wave a flag every time you get another customer. Dave
