Re: "What would be the impact if the 1.5 GHz Pentium 4 was no faster than a 1.2 GHz AThlon in Quake III benchmarks?
everybody who's a gamer and knows something about computers will tell their family and friends to buy an Athlon instead because it's cheaper and just as fast?"

Ok.

Then what would be the impact if the 1.5 GHz Pentium 4 was SIGNIFICANTLY faster than a 1.2 GHz AThlon in Quake III benchmarks?

I can almost virtually guarantee you thats what the hardware sites will say if that is the case. Guys like Anand at Anandtech dont pull any punches. Do not underestimate the influence they have on computer oriented people who read their site - this is how the orignal Athlon got its boost - not from AMD advertising.. but from hardware sites raving about it, and the word of mouth generated by those people reading the site, wanting to try it out.. liking the product when they got it and passing their recommendations based on their experiences and from the hardware sites on to others perhaps not as computer literate.

That will however, be the same if P IV blows everything away... conditional on price performance of course. If a P - IV 1.5ghz slightly outperforms a 1.2/1.33 Ghz athlon (or a 1.4 ghz Mustang?) but the AMD CPU is a couple hundred bucks less expensive.. a lot of the sites will have no hesitation on recommending getting an AMD CPU due to its price-performance ratio.
