Korea LG Elec, Intel to cooperate on notebook PCs

SEOUL, Oct 24 (Reuters) - South Korea's home electronics maker LG Electronics said on Tuesday it had agreed to produce low-priced notebook PCs in partnership with Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news).

``LG Electronics is currently mapping out specific sectors in which to cooperate with Intel and the low-priced notebook PC project is one of the strategic items,'' said Seo Beom-jun, a spokesman for LG.

LG put no monetary value on the notebook project and gave no other details.

LG and Intel signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday, covering the notebook project and cooperation in fields such as digital TV and Internet-enabled home appliances.

In August, LG formed a long-term strategic alliance covering marketing, technology development and intellectual property rights with Intel Corp, the world's largest computer chip maker.

Under the deal, LG said the two companies would cooperate in mobile computer, Internet products, and home networking businesses.

LG recently merged with LG Information and Communication, a telecom equipment maker, to better compete in the digital TV and wireless markets.

Shares in LG Electronics, a unit of LG Group [LUGG.UL], were up 800 won at 16,500 at 0335 GMT, while Intel shares closed up $0\04 at $43\05 on Monday.
