Hi Jdaasoc; I'm sure you know more about the prices for these things than I do.

My objective here is to have a decent time series that gives an indication of whether or not RDRAM is coming down in price to SDRAM levels. Eventually, I'd like the same thing with DDR. My expectation is that we will eventually see a RIMM penalty of around 50 to 100%.

What prices would you suggest I use? As you know, I've been comparing PC800 to PC133 prices from smsperling, which undoubtedly include more ECC type memories in the RDRAM series than in the SDRAM series. Do you have a historical set of prices for your suggestion?

P.S. The DDR for servers you're talking about is the "registered" variety, and I would expect to see it remain at a premium over SDRAM. IBM is pushing that technology. None of the DDR offered (to hardware developers) on the Crucial site are registered. Those Crucial memories are pretty reasonably priced, compared to the Crucial SDRAM.

Hi Jdaasoc; Re: " I have full faith that your recent price quote of $472.5 for 256 Mb of PC800 ECC RDRAM is accurate. However, my information indicates that registered DDR DRAM for servers, which Rambus will collect a royalty, will be in the same price range. I do not see a discount of more 10-20%." (Jdaasoc, Oct 24, 2000, #reply-14645775 )

I thought the registered parts would be kind of rare, and they are, but enough are out there that the price has come down to something reasonable. Especially compared to RDRAM. 256MB, 266MHz DDR registered ECC DIMMs from Micron are now listed on PriceWatch for $161. Link:
pricewatch.com

Crucial says you can have them for $125.09 (web price):

By comparison, PC800 is no cheaper than $250, and the 128MB PC800 bottoms out at $110 (on PriceWatch), so two sticks would still be $220. The discount is well below the 10-20% you were expecting. Where did you get your "information"?

Oh, and about that "Rambus will collect a royalty". Some of us aren't so sure of that.

P.S. More of the same cr@p from Jdaasoc last fall: #reply-15043732 #reply-15113750 The only conclusion I can come to is that he was mistaking pricing on samples for production pricing. Typically, he ignored my indications on real DDR pricing: #reply-15121159 .
