Actually, there is a good chance that QIII will be significantly faster on a P4 than an Athlon. QIII uses SSE and it is highly memory bandwidth dependent, one of the few benchmarks that showed much improvement with Rambus, for example. The problem, though is if the P4 is a killer Quake machine, but shows little or no advantage on other games, that will limit the market for it quite a bit amongst gamers, considering the cost. If "The Register" is to be believed, and they often get this stuff right, Tech Data is listing a 1.4GHz P4 with 64 meg of PC800 memory for $900. A motherboard is an additional $250. Assuming you can actually find a case and power supply for this puppy, you might be able to find it in screwdriver shops for less than $2000, sans monitor. Which is considerably more than a 1.2GHz Athlon will set you back today, much less in another month or so.
