Knight--At least you're honest about the fact that Bush probably can't do everything that he's talking about and balance the budget. You're right, he can't. I'll admit that a reasonable person can consider changing Social Security, but how you do what he proposes, and still pay current recipients, and still cut taxes by the massive amount he wants, will take a magician.

You're right about the interest payments on the debt will always be made, of course. What I believe (and both Gore and Bush are wrong on this, in my view), is that the principal on the debt should be paid off, not just the interest payments, and I don't see why that can't be done. For better or worse, Bush chooses a massive tax cut that will disproportionately aid the wealthy, while Gore has a lot of spending programs/tax credits (choose your label) that will principally help the middle class. How you vote depends on which side of the fence you want to help.

Both of these guys have flawed budgets, in my view, but I'm voting for Gore because I believe 1) the middle-class need help far more than the rich, and 2) Bush's plan, if implemented (which I still doubt, but if the GOP controls Congress, isn't impossible that they'd try) would be extraordinarily inflationary. Cutting taxes in a still over-heated economy would be like stepping on the accelerator while Alan Greenspan is stepping on the brakes....

Thoughtful reply, though, which is more than I'd give most "so's yo mama" commentary these days...
