I believe there are already some Sun "clones" (e.g. Tadpole), but they have tended to address niches in which Sun itself doesn't really play. I'm not sure how effectively Amdahl can "clone" Sun's big iron (unless with Sun's participation), because I suspect (haven't done any research, so I don't really know) some aspects of the architecture may be patent protected.

It could actually be a positive for Sun, if it grows the market and eases "sole source" anxiety among potential buyers.

But that's JMHO.

OS390/UNIX.
I am wandering if anybody can comment on OS390/UNIX (new name for Open Edition MVS)?
1.Does it play any significant role in the IBM marketing startegy?

Was it Amdahl salesmen who used to give potential clients coffee cups with Amdahl on them, and then tell the client to place the cup on their desk so that the IBM salesman can see it? Something like "Even if you don't buy from us and buy from IBM, if the IBM salesman sees our mug, you'll save a million".

Man, I've been long IBM so long, I can't remember whether I really read this, or am making it up :)
