the distributors have their prices,
TechData is the source of the P4/64MB-RIMM pricing at HardOCP.
The key is that TechData is a distributor, not a reseller.
Wonder what the mark-up is in the channels? I suspect it will be much higher to end users.

Tech Data sells only to qualified resellers and retail dealers. We don't sell to end users.

jim,

Let see... the distributors have their prices, their SKUs and the sales force will have completed its training by the end of this week. Do you really think that the launch date is the end of November?

From the little "inside" exposure I've had with Intel, they seem to be fairly religious about picking conservative dates and sticking to them. Also, they appear to like launching when products are actually available, not before. If the reports of week 48 are correct, then week 48 it will be. OTOH, with Comdex two weeks before and the demos that appear to be happening then, it would seem to me that this would be a better time to do the launch.

In some sense, we're splitting hairs. Whether they launch at Comdex or two weeks later isn't going to affect the first ship date, which is pretty much cast in stone at this point.

The P4 prices are low but this is not a Christmas item.

Are we entering into a new era of low prices and low volume?

They won't be low enough to be a Christmas item. If we didn't have the P4 for Christmas, the 1Ghz+ systems wouldn't be the big Christmas sellers, the lower-speed systems would be. The P4 boxes are going to be in that 1Ghz+ price range, not the 800Mhz and less (is there a less, still?) price range. Don't forget that each P4 box will have 2 RIMMs inside, as well (and they're still not cheap enough).

I'm not saying that Intel isn't going to be able to sell every P4 it makes, it's just not going to be for Christmas presents.
