Low turnout is normal in mature democracies because candidates are pulled to the center, and there are few matters that are galvanizing at stake.

I have no idea what you are talking about, when you talk about registering to vote as being hard. There are voter registration drives in many states, to take the process to the people, and it is ordinarily no more difficult than getting to the bank to transact business.

John McCain is not the nominee. Seems to me, the mileage was limited.......

<Please explain to me why so few Americans vote?>

These are rhetorical questions right?

You can have one from column A and two from column B

They don't don't like the choice of candidates.
They assume the election will play out regardless.
They assume the majority will remain constant without it.
They don't take their civil responsibility seriously.
They are too lazy.
They don't know where the polls are.
They become claustrophobic in voting booths.
They forgot it was election day.
They had a hang over from the night before.
They had the car break down.
They were on their honeymoon.
They were in jail.
-------------------
<don't you think it's therefore easier for candidates of either party to win reelection? The fact you've got a low
voter turnout means you can concentrate your resources more effectively.>
***************
Concetrate them where? Can't fathom your reasoning, the numbers still carry the day.
--------------------
<Why, for example, until only recently, why have voter registration laws traditionally been so stringent and unfair to working people who need to take time off to both register and vote? It's a lot more difficult for someone living on week to week wages than it is for someone living on a yearly salary to take time off from work.>

Your question is a non issue. Before registration and voting hours were liberalized voter turnout was higher than now. Old Republican axiom: The harder is is to come by, the more it is cherished.

Seems you are very unhappy with a political system the Democrats have managed in one form or another for the last 40-years. You should look to thyne own party for relief.
