I agree, there is too much politicization of such matters. For example, in the '80s a homeless advocacy group more or less invented the figure of 3million homeless, and tried to pretend that it was common to have families in such a situation. More realistic estimates put it at about 300thousand, and the overwhelming majority of cases were psychotics and substance abusers. But the Democrats were determined to show that Reagan was a heartless bastard whose policies were putting children on the street, so they ran with the misinformation. Later, it finally had to be conceded that the 3 million claim could not be sustained, and that most people on the street had psychological problems, but there was still little interest in working out a bipartisan consensus on how to deal with it.
